NAME: Edward Elric
CODENAME: Fullmetal Alchemist
SERIES/SOURCE: The Fullmetal Alchemist
AGE: 16
GENDER: Male
ROLE: Student
BACKGROUND: Edward Elric was born in a small farming community in the South to Trisha Elric and Von Hohenheim. Less than a year passed when his younger brother, Alphonse was born. As they grew up, many people mistook them for twin brothers even with the age gap. When the two were very young, their father left their mother, leaving behind everything except the clothing on his back.
The loss of his father made a huge impact on Edward's personality. He became belligerent to any sign of authority with the exception of his mother. He grew to dislike the mention that he was short since he considered himself to be the 'man of the house' and would normally look after his little brother while their mother worked to try to keep them fed and clothed. Once they were school aged, Trisha thought they'd be better looked after since they would be in a learning environment, but the education system in their little farm town proved to be woefully inadequate for their needs. The Elric boys were extremely bright, easily bored, and often got into trouble in the classroom. Their mother chose to keep them home schooled with a firm handed tutor.
At the age of ten, Ed's mother became ill and died suddenly. They were taken in by their beloved sitter, 'Granny Pinako,' who had a daughter that was a little older than they. This added loss devastated the brothers, causing Ed to become more rebellious and obtain the personality of a 'lone wolf.' He knew that his brother Al was hardest hit, and would worry when Alphonse would disappear for hours. Many times, Ed would find him at their mother's grave and sometimes he would find Al after dark, wandering out on the roads.
One day, without any true reason why he felt this, Ed went looking for his brother, worried that something may have happened to him. He found his little brother in a field during harvest, stuck out in the field in front of a harvesting machine, unable to alert the farmer that he was trapped. Edward never hesitated and ran in front of the machine, freeing his little brother and nearly loosing his life. The blades mangled his arm and leg so badly that he needed to have them amputated.
For months, Ed battled for his life, almost dying until his brother came up with a way to fight the infection raging in what was left of his limbs. He was in and out of consciousness during his healing process, but he knew somehow that Al never left his side. He also knew that he couldn't leave his brother. They were the only family they had left.
Pinako, their care taker, had been caring for Ed ever since he'd be injured. She was a talented surgeon in their small town, and had an uncanny knack for building useful machinery. Once Edward was safe from his injuries, she created mechanical limbs to attach to his body, giving him mobility and independence again. The recovery process was long and difficult, keeping the boy bed ridden for many more months. For most of the recovery time, he was unconscious, and there was a time when he took a turn for the worse, obtaining terrible infections in his arm and leg that would not respond to antibiotics or any other treatments. Pinako was certain he wouldn't survive, but when Al applied a home remedy to Edward's wounds (maggots were used to eat away rotten flesh and remove toxins,) he showed signs of improvement. It wasn't until later when Ed was nearly healed that he learned how Al saved his life. From then on, he couldn't bear to be near grubby insects or the scent of rotting flesh. When he was better and able to sit upright, he read many of his father's books, immersing himself in chemistry and science and atomic structures of things to keep his mind occupied as his body healed.
Once Ed was allowed out of bed, the brothers visited their mother's house, going through their father's library for more books. Alphonse had hidden in a giant suit of armor without Ed's knowledge, intending on scaring him. Ed wasn't aware of this, and when he went to look for his brother, his mutant powers started to manifest, scaring himself as he watched things that he touched transmute into other objects or blend into each other to form a new twisted item. The next thing he knew was that he was crashing into the armor that Alphonse was hiding in. It quickly became known that Al's body had disappeared and that he was now in the armor, a mutant himself.
The boys went into hiding in Pinako's house, unable to have a normal life because of their powers and the small, gossipy and closed minded attitude their hometown had adopted. It was obvious they couldn't try to live in this condition, so the brothers focused their attention to their studies. Edward used his father's texts and formulas to harness and control his powers to the point where he rarely needed the drawn circles and designs within them to focus his ability. It wasn't until months after the initial accident where the brothers learned that Alphonse had mutant abilities like Edward's (transmutation of materials,) but he couldn't use them as easily or fluently as Ed.
As time passed, the towns people were growing in their prejudices and were ready bodily remove the Elrics from their town. Before that could happen, a strange man with the ability to control fire appeared on their doorstep. He told the boys that there was a safe haven for people like them, and that they were welcome there. Even though they were still children, this man believed that the Elrics would be safer with them as anti-mutant demonstrations were becoming louder and more violent. The boys followed after the man a few days later, learning that the safe haven was an abandoned looking manor, without running water or electricity. Even though it was difficult surviving in the 'wilderness,' the boys learned much about themselves and how to harness their powers.
It was while they were in the Manor that Edward and Alphonse succeeded in restoring Alphonse's body with their mutant powers. He used a sigil drawn with his own blood on Al's armor, hoping that since they were siblings, that might help in restoring Alphonse. The transmutation worked, and Al was back in his own body, very weak and emaciated. Since it was impossible to get sufficient medical care, Ed remained at Al's bedside, helping him recover after years without a body. Even after a year, Alphonse wasn't completely back to normal, but they knew they were strong enough to overcome this.
The man who headed this small resistance force learned that Xavier Institute was reopening, possibly creating another children army to start another war. The only people in this group that could go under cover and find out what was really happening in the institution were the Elrics. They both went, but it was Ed who carried the feeling of dread behind his devil-may-care smile.
PERSONALITY:
Edward is a head strong, independant boy. For years, he and his brother have been together and been the only family since the death of their mother. Prior to her death, their father left the family when Edward was no older than four, acting as a catalyst for Ed to rebel against male authority figures. The resentment towards his father's abandonment and the death of his mother has helped facilitate Ed's anti social behaviors such as sarcasm and the sense of US against THEM when it comes to Ed and Al vs. the World.
While Ed can deal with people, any person who tries to explain that he and Al may have similar problems like others will be met with a vehement denial. He is the firm belief that since no one has been through their exact situation, they cannot empathize with him. in turn, this particular act of closed-mindedness inhibits Edward from empathizing well with anyone except his brother. The only other person he relates well and feels that he can confide in is his brother Alphonse. He has felt guilty about the inability to be the person Al needed (upon observing Al grieve for their mom, he felt that he wouldn't be good enough to take care of him) and has done everything he felt has been possible to put a smile on Al's face. There's also a feeling of responsibility for Al getting stuck in the armor, even though it was an accident that most likely couldn't be avoided.
With all the responsibility and guilt that Ed heaped upon himself, he's determined to make a difference in his own life and his brother's. It's a challenge for him, since he's really a sensitive soul who takes people's short jokes to heart and is always quick to defend his brother if others start picking on him. However, he still manages a quirky smile and an upbeat attitude for the public.
APPEARANCE:
Edward is a scrappy looking sixteen year old with long blond hair commonly pulled back in a braid and bangs that often fall into his face. He's slender with a muscular physique, slightly shorter than his younger brother at a height of 5' 0". His eyes are amber colored, sharp and piercing like a wolf's. Edward is missing his right arm from the shoulder down and his left leg from the thigh down; the limbs are replaced with metal limbs that don't have a full range of motion like his real limbs, and they are a little bulkier than his own body, but unless one is looking for them, they wouldn't notice that Ed was handicapped.
POWERS:
Ed has the ability to transmute common materials into other items. He can either fix a broken item or blend objects together. As long as the materials for two objects have similar base composition, he can change one object to another. No only can he transmute objects, but he can make the calculations with lightning precision and by thought only. In addition to his mutant abilities, he also is proficient in Martial Arts and is able to defend himself in hand to hand combat. If he uses his metal limbs, he can cause more damage than with his normal limbs, and even transmute his right hand into a blade for fighting. He can only transmute in non-living things with ease and organic items are more difficult. He hasn't attempted to transmute a living creature since restoring his brother's body, and has no desire to do so, either.

The Institute. Of all the rotten places the General could have sent us, he's sending us there. I don't like it. In fact, if I had it my way, we wouldn't be even getting on this train to get there. We could have gone anywhere else, anywhere but that death trap. I don't want to put ourselves in a situation where we're not going to be able to get out of it. We've struggled and gone through too much to be taken down by some crazy Professor brainwashing kids to do his bidding. That's the last place I want Al to be in. He's too trusting, too forgiving. He's everything I'm not, and like hell I'm going to have anyone turn him into what I've had to become to keep him safe.
Third-person sample:
Christmas time was almost upon them, and Ed still stalked the halls of the Institute with a glowering expression. He walked with his usual gait, that off kilter step-thump, step-thump, step-thump as he roamed silently and alone, briefly wondering where his brother was. Alphonse was somewhere, he knew that. The almost angry stalking slowed down to a stroll, his thoughts going to the past, where they were a happy family decorating a tree with hand made ornaments and pop corn garland. Simple times he wished they could go back to were nothing more than dreams and memories.
Speaking of Christmas, what did Al want? When it came to his brother, Ed knew everything about him, but when it came to the gift giving, he was at a loss. For years, Al asked for a kitten during those simpler times, and after the manifestation of his powers, he wanted to give Alphonse something that would make him smile when there was no mouth that could smile. And when they came to the manor, the chance to have a kitten was non existent because they were running on survival. But here... in this dreaded place that they had a mission to complete, seemed safe enough. Maybe he could get Al a kitten.
The thought placed a small smile on Ed's face, and as he continued walking the idea seemed better and better. After all, they weren't leaving the Institute for some time, and while they were here, they could have some semblance of a normal life. It was what they always wanted, after all: A place where they belonged.
His train of thought was derailed when another student shouted at him, making him look up to see that he stopped underneath some mistletoe. Great. Ed's sour mood plastered on his face when he heard the taunting and warnings that he couldn't move until someone kissed him. He hated the fact he needed to wait and play out this dumb game when he had other things to do. Then he felt lips on his cheek, a breeze brush by him and then Al was jogging away, laughing. For a moment, Ed stood there, stunned. And then he realized that his brother saved him from waiting underneath the mistletoe forever.
"You Jerk! That kiss was supposed to be from a girl!" He sprinted off after his brother, his heavy metal leg only slowing him down by a fraction while he chased after his brother. "You're going to pay for that!"
